Where is Our Gladness?

What excites us most reveals what we love most.

“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”
— Psalm 122:1

There seems to be a growing lack today of running to God.

Invite the average Christian to a ball field, and they’ll say, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go to the game.”
Invite them to the lake, and they’ll gladly rearrange the schedule.
Mention the mall, the movie, a weekend trip — and there’s excitement, anticipation, planning.

But invite that same person to the house of God…
And suddenly there are obstacles.
There might be weather three weeks from now.
There’s a game coming on sometime soon.
There’s something else that just feels more pressing.

And without saying it out loud, priorities are revealed.

David said, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.” That wasn’t duty speaking — that was desire. That wasn’t obligation — that was affection. The house of God wasn’t competing with other interests; it was the center of his joy.

We make time for what we treasure. We run toward what we love. And if we’re honest, our level of excitement about the things of God exposes the temperature of our hearts.

This isn’t about condemning recreation. It’s about examining affection. There is nothing wrong with a lake, a ball field, or a family outing. But when those things stir more gladness than gathering with God’s people, something inside needs adjustment.

If revival is going to come, it will begin when the people of God regain their gladness about the presence of God.
