The Cure You Cannot Change

By Pastor Justin Cooper

Picture a doctor holding the only cure to a disease that takes every life it touches. The recipe is in her hand — the exact ingredients, measured and proven. Now picture someone quietly changing that recipe. A little watered down here. A filler added there. And then that altered mixture gets carried out to a world that is dying for the real thing.

You would never stand for it. Neither would I. And yet this is exactly what has happened to the gospel. It is the cure for the deadliest condition any of us will ever carry, and people keep trying to change the ingredients.

When I ask people what the gospel is, I hear all kinds of answers. Be a good neighbor. Keep the rules. Attend faithfully. Get baptized the right way. Some of those things are good in their place, but not one of them is the gospel, and mistaking them for it is a costly error.

"There's some things that we can afford to disagree on. But the gospel is not one of those. You've got to get it right."

I do not say that to draw a hard line for the sake of being hard. I say it because your soul is at stake, and because you and I have been handed something too precious to hand off carelessly. There are matters where good people land in different places and the roof does not fall in. This is not one of them.

Listen to how Paul opens his letter to the Galatians. Right out of the gate, before a single word of small talk, he sets down the thing that matters most:

"Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world."

— Galatians 1:3–4

Read it slowly. Grace. Peace. Christ gave Himself. He delivered you. There is no rule to climb here, no ritual to complete, no fee to pay. The gospel is simply this: Christ died for your sins, He was buried, and He rose again. Nothing added. Nothing taken away. When you put your faith in that finished work, the righteousness of God is credited to you.

Here is where it meets your Monday. Sometime this week, someone will ask you what you believe, or a passing conversation will crack open a door. Before that moment comes, settle the answer in your own heart. Say it out loud until it is clear and simple: Christ died for me, He rose again, and I am saved by grace through faith — not by anything I add. When you can say it plainly, you can guard it faithfully, and you can hand it to someone else without changing the recipe.

Father, thank You for a gospel I could never earn and never repay. Guard it in me. Keep me from adding to it or trimming it down to fit my comfort. Make me clear, make me bold, and let the truth of what You did for me be settled deep in my heart. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection: If someone asked you today to explain the gospel in one breath, what would you say — and does your answer add anything to Christ's finished work?
