The Valley Between

I stood at a fork in a gravel road once, engine idling, genuinely unsure which way to turn. Both roads looked about the same. Both would get me somewhere. But I could not drive down both of them at the same time. Sooner or later, sitting still becomes its own decision.

That is exactly where a lot of us live spiritually. Not openly rebellious. Not fully surrendered. Just idling at the fork, hoping we never have to actually turn the wheel.

But the picture in 1 Samuel 17 will not let us idle. Two armies. Two hills. And a valley in between with no place to plant your feet. The Philistines on one side, the people of God on the other, and a line running clean down the middle of everything.

Notice what the valley is not. It is not a comfortable middle ground where you get the benefits of both hills. It is exposed. It is the one place an arrow can reach you from either direction. The middle is the most dangerous ground there is.

I want to be honest with you about something I said, because I meant every word of it:

You and I only have one set of legs, and they only carry us one direction at a time. We can wear the right bracelet and post the right verse, but our feet always tell the truth our mouths try to dress up. The question is never really where you stand on paper. It is which way you are actually walking.

Here is the tension I want you to feel this morning: the line has already been drawn for you. God drew it. That was settled long before you woke up. So the struggle is not whether there is a line. The struggle is whether your loyalty is as clear as the line already is.

The fork is not the enemy. The idling is.

Take an honest inventory. Before the day gets loud, name one specific place where you have been idling — one habit, one screen, one relationship, one attitude where you have been trying to face both hills at once. Do not vow to fix everything. Just turn the wheel one honest degree toward God. Say it out loud, and then take a single step.
