A Devotional from Pastor Justin Cooper

From the message: "Quench Not the Spirit"  |  1 Thessalonians 5:19

Don't Turn Him Down

You know the moment. You're about to say something kind โ€” and you don't. You feel nudged to stop and pray โ€” and you scroll instead. You sense something pulling you toward obedience โ€” and you push it aside. It doesn't feel dramatic. It rarely does. But quietly, almost imperceptibly, you've just turned the volume down.

That's what Paul is talking about in one of the shortest, sharpest commands in all of Scripture:

"Quench not the Spirit."

โ€” 1 Thessalonians 5:19

Three words. Zero wiggle room. And Pastor Cooper brought it home plainly: "Don't diminish and don't deafen or silence the influence and the voice and the impact of the Holy Spirit in your life."

Quenching isn't always rebellion. Sometimes it's just routine โ€” the steady habit of ignoring the Spirit's nudges until you can't hear them clearly anymore. Like a fire that doesn't go out in one dramatic moment, but slowly dies because no one fed it.

"Obey every impulse of the Holy Spirit." โ€” Pastor Justin Cooper

That's the invitation today. Not a ten-step plan. Not a spiritual overhaul. Just this: when you feel the Spirit move โ€” toward someone, toward prayer, toward surrender โ€” don't mute it. Don't stifle it. Follow it.

Pastor Cooper promised this: yield to the Holy Spirit throughout the day, submit to His leadership in your life, and watch what happens. More blessing. More peace. More fruit for the glory of God. Not because you worked harder โ€” but because you finally stopped turning Him down.

Today's Challenge

Every time you sense the Holy Spirit prompting you today โ€” to speak, to be still, to serve, to pray โ€” obey it immediately. Don't overthink it. Don't delay it. Just follow it and see where He leads.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I don't want to quench You. I don't want to live at a lower volume than what You intended. Forgive me for the times I've muted Your voice. Today, I choose to yield โ€” to obey every nudge, follow every prompting, and walk fully in step with You. Have Your way in me. Amen.

๐Ÿ“– Reflection Question

Is there an area of your life where you've been slowly turning the Holy Spirit's volume down? What would it look like to turn it back up today?
