Look Up

Look Up

By Pastor Justin Cooper

Years ago I read that D.L. Moody prayed God would not let a single day go by without giving him someone to witness to. That prayer got hold of me, and one night I prayed it too. Then I climbed into bed, and it hit me like conviction — I had not told anyone about Jesus all day.

About that time I heard a trash can dragging down the road. It was trash night. I got up, walked outside, and there at the end of the street was a young man rolling his can to the curb. I talked to him over the top of that trash can at nearly one in the morning. And before I went back to bed, he had trusted Christ.

I tell you that not because it always happens that way. It does not. I tell you because God had someone ready, and He was only waiting on me to look up.

Here is the honest struggle. When you and I are out in the world, it is so easy to put our heads down. We pull out the phone. We hurry past. And a harvest walks by us unnoticed. Listen to how Jesus said it in John 4 verse 35.

"Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest."

— John 4:35

The fields are not empty. They are full and ready. The old preacher John R. Rice said it well: the sea of humanity is full of fish, and they are always biting. I do not know which one will say yes. I only know they are out there, and they will not come find me. I have to go where they are.

"There is nothing better in this world than God using you to help somebody else get to Him."

You already go where people are every single day. The grocery store. The gas station. The hardware store. Your workplace. You do not have to change your whole life to reach a soul. You simply have to lift your eyes when you get there.

Have you let your heart grow a little hard toward people? It happens to all of us. And there is a way back.

So here is your next step this week, and it is not the same as noticing one name — it is going one step further. Pick one ordinary place you already have to go. Before you walk in, pray this: "God, make it easy. Give me someone who is ready." Then keep your head up, read a name tag, start one conversation, and be willing to say the name of Jesus out loud.

Not everyone can do everything.

But every saved person can be a witness.

Father, break my heart for souls again. Do not let me put my head down and walk past the harvest You have placed right in front of me. Open a door for me this week, give me the words, and give me someone who is ready. I am willing. Send me. In Jesus' name, amen.
Take action: What is the one ordinary place you'll go this week — and will you commit right now to looking up and starting one gospel conversation there?
