One Stone Was Enough

The victory in that valley was never carried by David's strength. It was carried by a single stone — pulled up out of the brook, dropped into a bag of lamb's skin, and sent flying at a mark it would not miss. David reached down and picked up five smooth stones, but only one was ever needed. The other four he kept as witnesses, silent proof that one was always enough. That is the truth I want you to hold onto today, because it is the same truth that holds up your whole salvation.

Think about what that stone really was. It came up out of the water. It was robed in the skin of the lamb. It flew swifter than David could ever run, and it never once missed its aim. It is a picture of Christ Himself, and I do not say that lightly:

A stone that never misses the mark. A stone that's without sin.

One stone. One Savior. One Champion who walked down into the valley so that no one else would have to. And notice where the real confidence in that story comes from. David told a trembling army not to let a single heart fail, because he was going to carry the fight for all of them. That is the exact heart of Jesus toward you and me — He did not come to give us a fighting chance in the valley. He came to be the Champion in our place.

This is the part so many of us miss. We keep gripping the sword, bracing for a fight that has already been decided, trying with all our strength to win a victory that Jesus already won. The battle was never ours to carry. It belongs to the Lord, and He does not lose.

So take one weight you have been straining under — an old habit, a fear you keep rehearsing, a wall between you and someone you love — and stop asking God to help you win it. Thank Him that the Champion already has. Then take the next step, not to earn the victory, but because it is already yours. You and I are not fighting toward the win. In Christ, we are living from it.
