Where the Fire Begins

There is a moment every fall when I pull the truck into the driveway, and the whole yard is covered in leaves I know I have to deal with. And every year I have the same thought: I could stand at the window and complain about the mess, or I could go get the rake. One of those actually changes the yard. The other just makes me tired.
I keep coming back to that, because I think a lot of us have decided that being upset about the state of the country is the same thing as doing something about it. It isn't. And I say that as the chief of sinners in this.
Think back to Achan for a minute. What undid him wasn't only that he took the forbidden thing — it's that he carried it around like everything was fine. Somewhere between the victory at Jericho and the defeat at Ai, he lived one way on the outside while he knew the truth on the inside. Achen lived like he was right when he knew he was wrong.
And that is the part that convicts me, because you and I can do the very same thing. We can preach it straight and post it loud and still be quietly cold on the inside. If we are ever going to see God move, we have to be humble enough to get honest about our own heart first.

I don't know how to say it any plainer than that. We keep waiting for the culture to change so the church can thrive. God works the other direction. He starts the fire in His own house, and it spreads out from there.
There is an old promise I keep returning to, and I want you to read it slowly, because it is not aimed at the people who don't know God. It is aimed at the ones who do.
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
— 2 Chronicles 7:14
Notice the order. Humble, pray, seek, turn — and then healing comes to the land. The nation's future runs straight through the honesty of God's people. That is convicting, but it is also the most hopeful thing I know. It means the healing of this country is not out of your hands. It starts within reach.
So here is your next step, and it is bigger than the last one. Don't just pray about the country this week — let God search you. Ask Him to name the one thing you've been living around. Then bring it into the light and turn from it. That is where revival actually begins. Not in a headline. In a surrendered heart.
I would rather stand for the truth than run from it.
And it still starts with me.
Lord, I'm done just being upset. Humble me. Search me. Name the thing I've been carrying and give me the courage to bring it into the light and leave it there. Start Your revival in me, and let it spread from my heart to my home to my church to this land I love. In Jesus' name, amen.
